Like all too many science fictions works, "Ringworld" was a hard act to follow. The problem is that the basic concept, the mind-blowing premise, is pretty much used up in the first installment and what comes in the later ones is anticlimactic. (For a perfect example, look at "The Matrix," which was fabulous, and the exceedingly disappointing second and third films in the trilogy.) One exception seems to be Phillip Jose Farmer's excellent "Riverworld" series, which maintained its sense of wonder and its suspense through at least three entries in the series. If you like "hard" (i.e., science-based) SF as opposed to sword-and-sorcery fantasy, check it out. Even better is Alfred Bester's marvelous "The Stars My Destination," perhaps the best SF novel ever written. Now that CGI special effects make it possible to bring literally anything to the screen, I hope some savvy producer or director will see fit to make a blockbuster movie of it.

What does "mince" mean in this context?
I liked the Ringworld series generally, and thought the entire series had merit, although I think I liked the first one best. The final one got a little over-the-top. (Ghouls!)

he does get more in depth in the later books as to how the ringworld was built and how it has been maintained. i have really enjoyed the series myself, and yes, i think the later books are a better read than the first.
