I just had that surgery in March actually. Also had the rotator cuff repaired and arthritis shaved off and the cartilage repaired. It wasn't pleasant but no surgery is.

The surgery itself lasted about three hours. I have an excellent orthopedic surgeon and this is very very important. I was sent home after recovery. I was placed in a "fixater" sling. This sling is also strapped around for torso and keeps the shoulder and arm completely imobile. I had to wear it for four weeks. I did take it off to sleep in and relax my arm some.

Very important that you ice the surgical area frequently to reduce pain and swelling. You will need help at home ovbiously. Get all your errands, grocery shopping and house cleaning and everything done before the surgery. You sure won't be able to or feel like doing it after. lol. You will also have pain meds. I had a pain pump for four days with a little bulb I could squeeze that delivered a topical anthesetic into the shoulder too which helped a whole bunch. They take it out when you go back for your first visit. You will need to sleep propped up will pillows supporting your arm and shoulder. I actually slept in my bark a lounger the first several days.

After the sling came off, I went to physical therapy three times a week for an hour each for 4 months to gain back my mobility, strength and flexibility. This is key. All your muscles go to crap realy fast. you need to see a real PT and not a PTA (an assistant). I now have most of the mobility and a lot of the strength back in my arm and shoulder. I have the stretchy thera bands that they gave me in therapy and still to my exercises at home every day too. It's a long haul but worth it. If you have some pain later on like I did in the joint, the doctor can also give you a cortisone shot to help with that.

It is best to have a very good Orthipedic Surgeon and discuss all of this with him and what will happen post surgery. Good Luck! You will be fine.

The cost of shoulder surgery is very low in India as compared to USA, UK and Canada. You can get the surgery done there in a fraction of cost of what would you pay in USA or private UK

There is one company that is very famous in India that arranges orthopaedic surgery for foreigners in India. They are called the Forerunners Healthcare. I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and about their patient stories.

I have also read that they arrange financing for American and Canadian patients as all surgery is not covered by insurance or by NHS in the UK.They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. The cost savings are incredible. As a doctor I personally believe that your joint surgery can be easily handled in India as the quality of healthcare available here is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star.

My cousin also got her hip replacement surgery for in India through the forerunners healthcare .She is more than very happy with the results. She is totally pain free now. She just paid 25% of the amount she was quoted in USA and is all praise for this forerunners healthcare company. Hope this helps.

No I never had surgery on my shoulder but I went through months of physical therapy for mine. I tore everything in my left shoulder 10 years ago. They wanted to do surgery but I said no. Good luck to you.
