hi there
I would like to find a website, with a search engine so that I can type in one band and then get a nice list back of a list of bands/artists similar to that of the band I searched for
any help will be muchly appreciated

without a doubt you need www.pandora.com
best music website out there. my computers at work, home everywhere are permanently hooked up. I think pandora is a much better site than last.fm
And its all free, with nothing to download.
I wish I could buy shares in it, it is the next step and will be massive in the next few years.

go to yahoo mainpage click on music link and this will take you too launchcast on top right of page put in band details click search choose your band and on the bands mainpage there will be a list of options detailing biographies videos albums and similiar artist and you can sign into this page using yoyr already established yahoo username and password

Try last.fm. You can download a plug-in for Windows Media Player which uploads details of the tracks you play. You can then ask it to find similar artists.

One thing to try is Google Sets - here - http://labs.google.com/sets, but you won't get very good results.
What you _really_ need is the Music Genome Project and Pandora internet radio - more information here - http://www.pandora.com/.
You give it a song or a band and it plays you similar ones for as long as you like.

Register and set up channels for certain songs or artists that you like, and they will show you others that are similar.

launchcast, it gives mainstream similar artist, and new artist not quite in the bigtime yet.
