Like in the US we ground them, yell at them, or put them in time out. What is a common punishment in other countries?

some parents use cane on their children (in my generation).
its a beating method. sorry i do not know what the cane is made up of.

but in recent years, most parents have only one kid so they might not use this method as the kid is super precious. unlike in older generations where there are more kids in the household.

i believe in scandanavia they have taken the step to stand up for children's rights and outlawed physical punishment.

it seems the more violent the parenting, the more violent the culture (87% of Americans, alas, still use violence to 'discipline' their children.)

I use respect-based techniques described in the terrific book, "How To Talk So Kids Will Listen and Listen So Kids Will Talk."
I don't use recommend any of the techniques you cite, tho truly I have yelled (and regretted it - shuts 'em down sure as anything.)
