how about a cat

Aww, why not a rat? Rats are awesome! A pair of girl rats are just the greatest things ever.
But, if that's out of the question, I would go with gerbils. Yeah, they really don't smell cuz they conserve urine so well, that they hardly pee at all.
Is he gentle with the other pets? My five yr old son is pretty rough, but he does well with the dogs. Maybe a kitten? Or an adult, very friendly cat?
I don't recommend hamsters because they are (usually) not very friendly. And reptiles can be difficult to care for, and expensive to start with.
Maybe a small bird, like a parakeet or cockatiel? They don't need huge cages and both can be pretty good talkers. If you can find hand-raised birds rather than pet store birds, they can make excellent companions and the whole family can enjoy them. They're also not real noisy.
Good luck!

The best pet for him would be something that is low maintenance, easy to care for, and won't clash with your existing pets. Definitely not a dog or cat! Lizards are actually hard work and you can't really interact with them, plus there is a risk of samonella poisoning if you touch them, and then touch your mouth without washing your hands. How about a small turtle? They are easy to care for, and fun to watch, but on the downside, you can't pet them. Hamsters are OK, but they can be a bit moody and are more prone to bite than other rodents. Gerbils have a more easygoing personality. Your parents could get your brother his own fish (a goldfish or betta in a bowl) that he could name and care for. How about a small frog? Same pluses and minuses as a turtle, though. What kind of a pet does he want?
Hope this helps!

My 5 year old nephew has been given a beta fish because he did well at school mostly because they are easily replaceable if they die and he wont have to know. I have got him a really cool ant farm for his brithday which hes going to love. Easy to look after and great fun to watch. the one I have lites up so will be used as a night light too.

I have two gerbils and they are sooooo easy and cute! they just cuddle all the time and chew on paper towel rolls. People don't believe me but they honestly DON'T smell! Because they are desert animals, they eat and drink very little and I can't even really see their poo when I clean the cage (about once a month). They are also cheap to buy and maintain. just make sure you get two from the same batch and of the same sex. They also make for great entertainment for me and my cats.

That's funny, because when I read "pets for five year olds" I thought rats would be perfect! I have 1 (had 2 till recently) and they are wonderful pets, intelligent, playful, and trainable. Plus, they live in a cage.

What about zebra finches - they are really cute little birds about the size of a finch with nice markings, or canaries they are lots of fun too.

I would suggest something big (so he can't hurt it) and docile (so it won't hurt him). A rabbit, hedgehog or turtle would probably work best, they're easier to keep and less dangerous for young kids than, say, a parrot or a lizard.

What about a rabbit? Relatively easy to look after, especially as you already have guinea pigs.
