National Australia Day - January 26

"First celebrations:

On January 26, 1788 Captain Arthur Phillip took formal possession of the colony of New South Wales and became its first Governor.

The fledging colony soon began to celebrate the anniversary of this date. Manning Clarke notes that in 1808 the "anniversary of the foundation of the colony" was observed in the traditional manner with "drinking and merriment".

The first official celebrations were held in 1818 to mark the 30th anniversary of white settlement. Governor Macquarie officiated at a thirty-gun salute during the day and a dinner ball at Government House that evening."

Australia Day, 26th of January
That's when 6 colonies became one nation in 1901

There is also ANZAC Day, 25th April, to remember the military servicemen and women's sacrifice. Australia is unique in that the day for Armed services in not on the anniversay of a military victory. (ANZAC = Australian and New Zealand Army Corps)
It was the first time aussies fought under aussie commanders instead of British. That was WW II in Turkey. trench war at its worse.
We lost a lot of guys landing on the beaches and couldn't move forward for months. Brits wanted us to stay as long as possible, cuz it took Turks away from other front lines.
To retreat was going to look as bloody as the landing - Dunkirk style. But aussie know how let us get out without any injuries (except guys that tripped). Rifles were left poking over trenches with a firing delay (water dripping into cans attached to triggers). Cuz there were shots through the night, Turks didn't come out of trenches till the morning and we were already gone.
