Total off the top of my head BS answer here, but....

I heard it was because they (Europeans) generally thought bathing to be bad for your health. Since there was no water quality testing at the time and for all I know there may have been areas contaminated with raw sewage, they may have been right, but not realized it. They probably had no modern concept of water purification either. Of course Indians have been bathing in the Ganges for thousands of years and I doubt they had any letup in bathing.

im thinking back then they didnt have water heaters so in the winter they dont take showers and if they did they probably end up dead from the cold.
