Bartering is what is older than "purchasing".
Way back when, they didnt have "money" or an exchange rate, so, they would barter a certain amount of this for that, some labor for crops, (also, called share cropping), a bushel of corn for a bushel of wheat, and so forth.
Currency didnt come about until way later and I dont remember the history of it, but, bartering was among the first row of business, and I would bet, that the women of the house, was the first one to barter with thier neighbor for the "cup of sugar" :)
