I think the latest FIRST AID thinking on this is : Rest, Elevation of the limb, light compression and an ice pack. Don't keep the ice on all the time, and don't put ice directly onto skin. Wrap in a light cloth first. You should do 15 minutes on and 15 minutes off. If there is pain, some painkillers will make him more comfortable. Then doc in the morning! Good Luck. Its not a vital emergency in spite of what you may read on this site. If the A&E are busy , you would not be classed as priority by a triage nurse.

Ice on the knee and probably a trip to A & E if it's swollen so much that he can't walk.
It's hardly first aid if you are waiting for an answer from here. What time did this happen? Act now!

have him lay in bed, put some warm towels on the knee and give him some pain relievers. It will hurt when he tries to walk. He might even not be able to walk for a few hours to days, max 2. It happened to me too. Take him to the doctor on Monday for an x-ray to see if everything is fine. Take good care and I hope he gets better.

I would probably place ice pack onto the area (wrapped in a towel) and take him along to A&E as he could have damaged his tendon/ligament.
They may well just advise pain relieft (paracetomal every 4 hours and every 4 hour but inbetween the paracetomal to take Ibuprofen/nurofen) and may also apply a tubi grip/support aid to the knee to help reduce the pain and swelling.
hope this helps.

Get him a knee immobiliser and if it does not get better in a few
days, visit a doctor. However, on second thoughts, perhaps go
to the doctor first.
