Cable goes in directly from the same cable you get your TV service from and there's also Satellite (which sucks big time). Another thing you might want to check out is wireless internet which requires an antennae on your roof with very little blockage from trees. The signal doesn't reach very far so there has to be an antennae in place from your service provider for it to work properly. Usually the service provider attaches these antennaes to the top of water towers for maximum reach. Your best bet is to just get Cable and you don't need to have cable TV to get it either.

Cable modem, for one. Some phone companies will sell you DSL without subscribing to the basic phone service. The charge is usually higher for that type of service.
