My husband and I went out to eat last night and our bill came to $27 (it was $22 at first but they were selling raffle tickets to help a charity so we bought $5 worth). We gave the waitress $40 (2 twenties) and waited for change. We figured we would leave around $6 (which is over 20%). When she came back with our change it was a ten dollar bill and three ones. I think that she gave us a ten in hopes that we would just leave that for her. Thats annoying to me. She was pretty nice, but I think $10 for a $27 bill is a bit much. What do you guys think?

We ended up leaving $5 --- the three ones, and two dollars in change that I had in my purse.

She messed up.
It was an arrogant move and I bet you she knew it too!
She wanted that ten.
As a former wait-staff, only the ego-centrics do things like that.
I would have left you 2-fives and 3-ones, Hoping that I whould get the five.
I hope you only left her $3.
If you left the ten, then you just fueled her pompous attitude.

you can look at that in so many ways.. there are some places where the waitress doesnt even make the change someone else does, maybe there werent any 5's left in the register. I ahve never gone to a resturant that they gave me back two 5's for a ten actually they arent suppose to. I have a daughter inlaw that works at Hooters, a daughter that works at Red Lobster and one that has worked at Cracker Barrell. They say they are suppose to give you back the correct change in the apropriate way. And 2 of them say they dont even handle the register so it was never up to them. I personally think there should be no tipping, waitreeses chould get paid regular pay like everyone else.

You would only be tipping on the $22 because the waitress doesn't get a tip on a raffle ticket. In that case, I would have gone to the hostess counter and asked for smaller bills or I would have left nothing at all. It was very rude and presumptuous for the waitress to do that. She was counting on your leaving the $10 bill for her. What did you do?

She either wasn't thinking straight, or she was hoping for that ten dollar bill. Ten is too much and three is too little. If she was indeed trying for the ten, then she's greedy and deserves the three. After all, your bill was $22, not $27. I would have simply asked for two fives for the ten and left her six dollars. But deep down, I believe she was going for the ten.

I also think she was going after the $10 and would have retaliated with a small tip, if any. When a server does a great job we often leave a huge tip but if they blow it at the very end with that annoying question, "Do you want change?" we often don't leave a tip at all. If they are so lazy that they don't want to make an extra trip back to the table they don't deserve any tip. That said... I truly believe servers work extremely hard and deserve all the tips they can get IF they are earned and not automatically expected.

Being a former waitress, she gave you back the correct change. I don't think she wanted the ten as part of the tip I sure wouldn't expect it. What gets me is when a server ask you if you want your change back.

the amount right now for a proper tip is 15% I have always thought anything is a tip it's nice to leave them something but with the prices of everything it's almost getting to be a no tip world unless your rich. AND THE WORSE TIPPERS BELIEVE IT OR NOT IS THOSE THAT WORK FOR TIPS

the waitress doesn't give your change the cashiere does. if you wanted/needed change you should have asked, it's very possible they were running low on fives. i'm a host/cashiere and i give out the fewest bills neccessary unless asked to do otherwise. as for the amount $5 was perfectly sufficent

You are quite likely correct; the waitress was probably hoping you'd tip more. Her maneuver was a subtle psychological ploy. 20-30% is more than adequate.
