I dont know about you but sports days dont seem the same anymore, why cant the government set out guidelines to all the schools with set events which will all be recorded then put on a data base and the best runers jumpers and throwers etc can be creamed off the top and offered the chance to join harrier groups, then we might have a few more medal hopefulls instead of very boring sports days.

And what are the Olympics other than bragging rights?

Competitiveness in our schools is virtually non-existent. I have a neighbour who is a physical education school teacher. Sport in most schools, according to him, is frowned upon, especially by the 'left' who think that competition is bad because there are losers. I met an 8 year old boy recently, he is the son of a mate of mine who brought him around on a visit. The boy, name of Oscar, is keen on the idea of becoming a runner. There are no facilities at his school for this activity and no plans to have any. Many schools have over the years, sold off their sports grounds to finance repairs to existing buildings or to buy books which an assortment of governments were to mean to pay for.

They would be better to concentrate on pupils learning to read and write first.

As for the Olympics, I fear this will be another farce that London is unable to host.

Do you think we will be ready to host such an event, bearing in mind the internal squabbling at the moment and the resistance being shown by people who are being forced to be re-housed, lose the garden plots they have tended for years etc.

The money being spent on this non-event would be better spent building schools, hospitals, prisons etc.which are badly needed.

Competitiveness is good for us but what you suggest smacks of elitism to me. NOT a good idea.

it's not about competitive athletes; it's about the money it takes to expose your child.
