Buy a book called Rats by Debbie Ducommun, read it and show them that you're doing your research about them. Go to your local pet store, talk to someone who knows a lot about rats.
Then tell your parents what you've learned about the rats, this way they know that you're very serious about taking care of them properly. Also explain to them that you will be paying for the rats, etc.
Make sure you get at least two rats, same sex otherwise you'll have babies and that's not very responsible. Get a decent sized cage, the cage I bought cost about $150 and can actually hold up to six rats when really I only have three. They need places to hide, they need proper bedding (no pine or cedar as it's toxic to rats.) They need rat food that has a mix of seeds and grains, they also need something called rat blocks. They need fresh fruits and vegetables, when you read the book I recommended to you it'll tell you how much should be fed and such. The book also talks about common health problems, etc.
So basically just let your parents know exactly how resposible you're going to be with the rats and that you're ready to handle them.
That's what I did and my parents let me get them. They actually ended up loving my guys, they play with them too. You'll be surprised at how interactive your parents will be with your rats no matter how much they may hate the idea when you present it to them.

My friends have pet rats, and I was pleasantly surprised. They really do make good pets!

You could tell your parents that rats are not the stinky germ-ridden rodents that people think they are, and there is a world of difference between a pet rat and the kind that live under your house. They come in all colors, even spotted!, with dark or red eyes. They are very odor free (as long as you keep the cage clean). They are smart, and if you pick your rat carefully (be sure to handle the rat before purchasing to determine if it is gentle) they can be gentle and loving pets.
The best way might be to let your parents read Internet articles on rats as pets, you could purchase them a book about rats, or pick up a magazine or fact sheet at the pet shot about rats.
Hope this helps!

I had a rat as a pet, once. I loved it. He would do anything for food, just about. I found it difficult with other people, who came to visit me, to get them past the awful reputation rats have gotten over the centuries.

If you have explained to your parents that you plan to pay for everything and take care of it, then the only reason why they are probably hesitant is because they know very little about this great pet.

I agree with what the other person answered, that printing out the positive things about this pet may help to educate your parents and put their worries behind them.

Good Luck and Take Care

Compare it to their favorite animals. For example, my boyfriend loves cats, but didn't like my rats when I got them. So I showed him how they run around and play, they play with string, they wrestle with my hand, they lick my hand. He is more accepting now, except for the smell. If that is their issue, I use a Citrus pet deodorizer that contains charcoal, and it clears up the smell in my room.

Show them the cute pictures of rats on the Internet.

I have 5 pet rats. I also live outside of my parents home, but when we go home, we take them with us. I think that most people do not know how amazing rats truly are. The are extremely intelligent, very low maintenance and unbelievably lovable and affectionate.

I can get you a ton of information if you want to email me privately.

I know that when my mom found out how amazing they truly were, she changed her mind about them...but only a little.
