I am considerering replacing my cedar shake roof with 30 lb underlayment and 30 year warranty shingles. We live near an airport, so noise is important. Will I have less noise or more with asphalt roofing?

Well, lets figure this, knock on a piece of wood, and you will hear the knock. Knock on a piece of asphault shingle, and it will absorb the sound.

So, you live next to an airport. Then I would "sound proof" the entire house! I would get "Rock Wool" and put it in the walls, and in the attic. Its the Best insulation value for soundproofing recommended by THIS OLD HOUSE...(And I would trust those people who did a study on this).

Now, I would get double insulated windows, so that you can stop the vibration of the roaring jet engines, and that will help muffle the sound.

(I have actually been just ouside a house, with all this, and they had a HUGE party going on, with stereo blasting so that it almost deafened me, walking in, and outside I thought there was actually NO ONE HOME!!! IT WAS SO QUIET!

I know it works.

I wish you well..

Jesse

I would go with the asphalt shingles. They would absorb more of the sound, especially with the underlayment. I believe the cedar shingles go on a frame work with no backing.

How about asking your insurance company how much you will save on homeowners insurance if you switch to asphalt shingles and using that money for sound deadening material. wood shingles are a higher fire risk than asphalt and cost more to insure.

About the same. Inside the house you won't hear it hitting the roof on either
