Why can't scietists alter the genetic make-up of a dog's DNA to make they're aging process the same speed as it's human owner? I have a 13 year old dog and I I've accepted the fact that she may not be around for Christmas coz she has Congenitive Heart Failure. Dogs are man's best friend so why can't we help them live longer. I have a younger dog and I'm starting to regret getting her coz I know that I'll go through the same thing a few years from now when she's old too.

Dogs, like humans and almost all other living things, have a lifespan limited by their genetic code...
Science is working on this code and may actually be able to control aging in humans within the next 20 or 30 years...
Dogs and many other animals may come soon also...

That is typically seeing that of measurement and weight burdon. If you assume a chihuahua bouncing round in comparison with a Saint Bernard. The Saint Bernard has a lot extra weight to throw around and that reasons extra stress on joints, interior organs and general wellness. Chihuahua's hardly ever weigh a factor so don't seem to be inflicting as a lot stress to thier organs. The larger the dog, the more the body has to work , the heart has to work even tougher to pump blood to all the organs, the more weight, the more stress it puts on the body and joints. Most important to make certain that Any canine is healthful for its weight range and in just right cardiovascular shape to lengthen its existence span. Its practically like pronouncing - Why does a skinner/fitter individual live much longer than an overweight individual.

If you take the average heart rate and multiply it by the average life span to get the average numbers of heart beats in a lifetime, most mammals live the same amount of heartbeats. However, I once read that there were two animal exceptions, both of which live twice as long as they should. Humans are one and dolphins are the other, curiously both said to having higher intelligence than other mammals, although I've yet to see conclusive proof for intelligence in the first.

If scientists could do that, they'd be busy working on making humans live for 500 years, not on making dogs live as long as humans. The fact is, some animals just don't have the right chemistry to live for a long time. If you want a pet that will live long, get yourself a parrot or a koi, they can sometimes live almost as long as humans.

Also, I like your avatar. :P

Aww, sorry to hear about your dog. We've been through a lot of them but luckily most of ours were 15-16. Think of it this way--I know it hurts when they die, but would you trade that grief for all the years of fun and love you got from your dog? And more importantly, would your DOG have wanted you to trade that? You've made your dog happy for all these years and even though YOU think you might regret having gotten another one, I'll bet the dog is happy that you did! :)

The same reason they can't make people live longer through science. Just a good and healthy lifestyle with God's blessing, can make your life not only longer, but filled with more happiness.

It's one of life's elusive questions.

Would you want to live to be 120 only to be in constant pain and popping pills 90% of the time you have your eyes open?

Human's only can live an average of 80 years outside the womb for obvious reasons.and then the body begins to deterrioate.

It's part of the cycle we only have begun to understand.

I agree that you should probably give up on getting new pets if you can't deal with the loss to a natural life span. It is all a part of the natural order of Life. Enjoy them while they are with you and treat them well. You carry a piece of them with you in your heart and they live in your remembrance.
