They are going to need an actual card so they can make a photo copy of it. A card is really easy to get a copy of if you lost yours. Just go to the Social Security office with at least 2 pieces of i.d. and ask for another one. I think it costs like $5 or something. (It's been a long time since I had to get one so I don't remember the exact amount.) It gets mailed to your house in a couple of weeks. Employers are usually very understanding and will just work with the number you give them for a while.

The Social security card in itself was not too important and was seldom used, unlike the SS number. With recent changes in identification security and laws there are more occasions where the actual card is being asked. Go to your local Social Security office and apply for a copy (you will be asked to show proof of identity: birth certificate, drivers' license, passport, etc.). It takes less than two weeks to get it in the mail. I think your employer will understand your situation and will appreciate you are applying for a copy of the card.

I had an employer who gave me a hard time because I signed my name using a middle initial, but did not have a middle initial on my Social Security card. I had to get a new card from Social Security.
I suggest you contact your Social Security office 1st thing in the morning and apply for a replacement card. It's a relatively painless process and may save you a great deal of grief later, as most employers want to take photocopies of your driver's license and SS card to protect themselves from INS investigations.

If they've asked for your driver's license AND your social security card, then you're going to need the actual card so that they can make a copy of it.
If you don't have it or can't find it, then you're going to have to contact the proper government agency and get another card.
Just because you have plenty of documents with you SS # on them, isn't going to cut it. Sorry.

yes they will give you a hard time, if they are asking for it, it means they have had issues with people lying about it in the past and they want to see the card. just order a replacement card from the SSA, it is free. link is below, if you are a us citizen then you will need your driver license, and a birth certificate or passport, fill out the ssa-5 form and go to the ssa office for an interview.

You really need to show the card, because your job will photocopy it. Just head to the local SS office and apply to get a copy of your card. I'm worried where your first one is! That is something you don't want to lose!

Go to the Social Security Office and they will issue you a new one. It will be sent to you by mail. You need to let your employer know. You can even ask them if there is another form of ID that you can show them. You need to get this done so that you can recieve a paycheck.

They normally want a card. Just give them your number & tell them you're applying for a new card from the SS office because you lost yours.

They'll need your social security card. If you don't have one, bring your birth certificate. Unfortunately, other paperwork with your social security number won't be adequate.
