because she wanted to give it to jack. the boat she was on was right over the spot where the titanic sank and she let go of jack when he was frozen at around that spot, so she wanted to give him the necklace as a representation of her heart so he would know that she still loved him. she also wanted to say that she was ready to let go of him mentally because even when she let him sink because he was frozen to death, she still held on to him in her heart. she had told her story, so know people knew what really happened and that he existed and she had fufilled her promise to him. she didnt die that night, she got married, and she had a lot of kids. she also fufilled a promise to herself by telling her one and only loves story to the world.

I always thought it was a highly romantic moment, then I get really mad. Why couldn't she have given the diamond to the guy searching for it? He really needed it. She was so selfish. She had lived a full life and had all the fun that she and Jack talked about. Why couldn't she be a giving person and share her good fortune by giving it to the guy who was searching for it. It made her seem so self serving and indulgent. Did you ever see the SNL parody of the Titanic? The crew ends up beating the old lady in order to ge the diamond. It kinda ruined the ending of the film for me. Whenever I watch the movie, the ending reminds me of that SNL sketch and I start gigling. Still think Rose was selfish!

I think that it symbolizes her love for Jack, and since he's somewhere down there, she gave him her heart after so many years, at the close end of her life.
She probably didn't want "The Heart of the Ocean" to be found, because it belongs to Jack and her, symbolizing their love for each other.
At least that's my opinion.

I love the movie, it's really amazing... I cry each time I see it, or when I listen to it's music.

After contemplating the sinking and everything she went through, and the love she lost she thought that pitching the diamond was symbolic of everything she lost. I heard she did really well in the . com boom and didn't need the money. She was also jealous of her granddaughter's looks and I feel the was the determining factor in giving the rock back to the sea.

I think that she did it because that is where her true heart was, and it was kind of to symbolize that she had come full circle, and was giving her heart back to the man that she really loved.

I think she did as a way to symbalize that her heart will always be with Jack.

i think she was just sad because it reminded her of the titanic and she lost her "boyfriend" the day the ship sunk.
