You know what I mean - the ones that go automatically into the Yahoo Bulk mail file with weird subject headings like "sense, like money, is Hardin" or whatever. I never open the emails so i don't know what they say. What is the purpose of those? Is it just to catch my attention so I;ll open it and see what it is?

That way they are not dectected as spam. If they put certain words in, (anything sexual or marketing terms) the email will be sent to a junk pile.

They are generated by automatic programs that have a list of words (leaving out the ones that a spam filter would block i.e. sexual or swearing) and have an algorithm that tries to make them into a sentence.
This way the program can just send out 10's or 100's of thousands of different emails and they only have to get 1 or 2 people to 'click' the link embedded in the message to make it worth their while.
Occasionally by chance one or two may even make sense !

It's all about sparking your curiosity. For instance, if I sent you an email saying, "Free mortgage information" you would be like, "I don't want this crap and then delete it" However, if I sent you something with a random heading your curiosity would spark and you will be more likely to click and see what it is. It's all a marketing ploy.
