I have received emails from persons who use 3 letters after the "@" then, "-inc.com". Are the 3 letters just part of a person's name? Just a "personalized" email address? Or do they stand for a particular business? Further, if a business, can those "3 letters" be researched as to what they "stand for"? One is "@lan-inc.com".

anything after the @ sign should be the web address or server. for example xxx@yahoo.com.

If you want to see if the company exists, go to http://www.internic.net and do a whois search - just input whatever is after the @ in the email address, and it should provide you with the domain registration info.

However, email addresses are easily spoofed - you would need to be able to trace the actual origin of the email via ip addresses to know if the email even originated from there.

Most businesses that have email addresses like
xxx@lan-inc.com also have a web site like
http://www.lan-inc.com/

Otherwise, there is no real way to know.
