Macedonia is one of the biggest regions of Greece. It is situated in the north part of Greece and it borders 3 Balkan states.
The ancient Macedonia was a Greek kingdom and it was roughly the same size as the modern region of Macedonia. From the Greek state of Macedonia Alexander started his epic campaign of spreading the Greek culture and the Greek civilization all over the known word. His campaign was so successful that for nearly 300 years Greek (Hellenistic) Kingdoms controlled Asia Minor, Middle East, Egypt and even the north part of India.
There is also a state that emerged from Yugoslavia and it is officially recognized by UN as FYROM meaning Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. That country has no relation with ancient (or modern) Greek Macedonia but it is instead a Slavic/Albanian country. {The 1/3 of the population is Slav-Macedonians (of Bulgarian origin) and the 2/3 is Albanian/Macedonians}
During the communist dictatorship of Tito a great propaganda took place in that state. The propaganda tried to “convert” the mixed population to believe that they are linked to the ancient Greek Macedonians and that they need to take real Macedonia back from Greece.
The propaganda has worked on some on the Slavs and some (few fanatics) actually believe that they are true Macedonians and although they speak a Slavic language and they are part of the Slavic culture they actually believe that they are not Slavs!!!!
Of course the government of FYROM (Slavic/Albanian-Macedonia) has clearly stated that they are not linked to Greek Macedonia and Alexander the Great and is still doing a great effort to stop the few fanatics from compromising the stability of the new state.
Also the Slav/Albanian Macedonia is negotiating with Greece (under the UN authority) for an international name that will not insult the Greeks and will not have any claim against Greek Macedonia.
(The name that the country is using for itself is actually Makedonija but they are using internationally the Greek name Macedonia and a lot tend to confuse the Slavic/Albanian state with Greek Macedonia).

Macedonia is a republic in the Balkans, it was part of Yugoslavia and its population is with Slavic origin. There's a province Macedonia in Northern Greece, where the people are also called 'Macedonians'. The Slavic Macedonians and the Greek Macedonians have in common the culture (byzantine), the traditions and the folklore, although the languages between them are different, with a mutual understanding of 5-10%.

The Republic of Macedonia, often referred to as Macedonia, is a landlocked country on the Balkan peninsula in southeastern Europe. It borders Serbia to the north, Albania to the west, Greece to the south, and Bulgaria to the east. As the result of a naming dispute with Greece, in 1993 it was admitted to the United Nations under the provisional name the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM), pending resolution of the dispute.

The capital is Skopje, with more than 600,000 inhabitants, and there are a number of smaller cities, notably Bitola, Prilep, Tetovo, Kumanovo, Ohrid, Veles, Štip, and Strumica. It has more than 50 natural and artificial lakes and sixteen mountains higher than 2,000 meters (6,550 ft) above sea level.

The country is a member of the UN and the Council of Europe and an associate member of La Francophonie, the World Trade Organization (WTO), the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe. Since December 2005 it is also a candidate for joining the European Union and has applied for NATO membership.

There are two Macedonias - one is a republic in the southern part of what used to be Yugoslavia - the other, going back further (to the time of Alexangder the Great more than 2000 years ago) was a Greek Kingdom in the northern part of present day Greece - not too far from present day Macedonia.

The present day Macedonia is Slavic and has no descendant relation to ancient Greek Macedonia. This is quite a sore spot with most Greeks who will tell you that the Slavic Macedonia coopted their name and identity. To make it more complicated however, there are some historians who believe that ALL modern days Greeks are in fact Slavs and are not the descendents of the ancient Greeks - that they merely "took" the Greek language somewhat similar to how the French language is really an adopted language by Gauls who assumed Latin

Macedonia was a kingdom in the ancient world in what is modern day Greece.

There are two modern places called Macedonia. One is a region within Greece. The other is one of the now-independent parts of the former Yugoslavia. This new republic wanted to be called Macedonia but Greece objected. So it is known as FYROM - Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.
