Because the sources from which English is derived are so varied: Germanic, French, Latin, Gaelic, Nordic, etc.
It must be one of the hardest languages to learn.

THe English language was mostly phonetic when it was first written, several hundred years ago. But since then the accents and pronounciations have changes while the spelling has stayed the same. Some common words are gradually being spelled in more modern ways to reflect the way they are pronounced, like draft for draught, but there are so many different ways to pronounce the words that it is not clear how they should be changed - should it be the English, American, Canadian, India, African or Caribbean pronounciation that is followed?
