A DVD/ CD combo drive has two separate lasers. One laser is used to read DVD's and the other laser is used to read CD's. It is possible that you've burnt out the CD laser but the DVD laser is still functional. An optical drive (DVD or CD) has a lifespan of 50,000 - 75,000 hours of use. It is cheap to buy a new optical drive than try to repair the old one.

Another possibility is that there is some debris on the CD laser, which is preventing the drive from working properly. You can purchase a lens cleaner and see if that solves the problem. You can a lens cleaner at your local computer store; it costs about $10.00 .
