The expression "Right from the horse's mouth" probably is related in origin to the expression "Never look a gift horse in the mouth". The reason for this is that thoroughbred racehorses are tattooed inside the mouth for identification purposes. Thus, you can find out the horse's identity from the tattoo inside the mouth. If you get this information "Right from the horse's mouth", you know it's the truth. The reason you "Never look a gift horse in the mouth" is that you might find out that it really belongs to someone else.

I believe it originated when people used horses as a primary means of transportation. Horses' ages are judged by their teeth. So, someone might try to sell a horse and say it is younger than it actually is, but the answer is "right from the horse's mouth".
Anyway, that's what my dad told me but I don't know if it is true or not.

It originated from the Bible. In the Old Testament there was a man named Balaam and he was a prophet. The trouble was that he did not know which side to be on and he got into trouble that way.
A king had paid him to curse the Israelites as they passed through and he agreed to that.
As he was on his way he came to a place that was tight on both sides and his donkey sat down and refused to move.
He beat her and she said,"Why are you beating me?Haven't I been faithful to you all these years?"
He answered her by saying,"If I had something I would kill you!"
An angel appeared with a drawn sword and told Balaam:"Why have you beaten her?If she had not stopped you I would have slain you.I have been sent by God to stop you."
The angel then told Balaam to tell the king that the Israelites were coming through, one way or the other.
