Because the insurance industry doesn't want to pay your hospital bills when you have an accident. The insurance industry is a powerful organization and it was able to bribe the political powers to enact a law in that regard. So, nowadays it's illegal not to wear a seatbelt while driving. You will get an ticket if you don't. Duh!

The "nanny state" has decided that freedom and personal responsibility are bad things. Because they were unable to convince people to wear the belts voluntarily, they were going to use the threat of fines to force people to do what was "best" for them.

As an adult you should have a choice, but the "nannies" think you are too stupid!!

Well, firstly and most obviously is the fact that more people survive car crashes with their seat belts on than those who don't.

Secondly, in most areas of the U.S. it is the law.

This also ties into the fact that if you want to enjoy the society that you are currently in you have to follow the rules. Conversely, there is nothing stopping you from going out in the middle of nowhere to live and doing whatever you darn well please. :)

I think it actually has to do with keeping insurance prices down, because there are less fatalities when people wear seat belts - which means lower premiums for all of us.

Plus, it's really just a good idea.

You shouldn't, but the EMT's are probably tired of scraping people off the side of the road; so it helps make their job easier.

In the final analysis, after all pro/con issues are discussed, the real answer to your question depends upon if you are... smart or stupid. Depending upon that status, the corresponding logic answers your question.

Because if a crash occurs, you could be catapulted through the windshield and die. Big price to pay for being stubborn.
