My parents went to America about eight years ago and in their hotel they could only get local news on TV. They relied on the Internet for news. So yes, you are right, the Yanks are ignorant about world affairs.

America is mostly a country of the unbelievably stupid, naive and ignorant.
However, it has become rich and powerful because of a land rich in natural resources (taken with much bloodshed from the natives) and because of a small minority of brilliant scientists and intellectuals who are held in contempt by the majority who take advantage of their achievements.
America has been so provably wrong on so many issues it is absurd and they are too stupid to see it.
1. They now talk about solving the problems of the Middle East after voting in a president who initially said the rest of the world didn't matter to Americans (and wanted to pull out of the Palestinian/Israeli peace process- the Palestinian situation being a prime recruiting sergeant for terrorists)
2. They ignored the rest of the world who warned that they should take stock and plan before invading Iraq (and many of these supported eventual military action.
3. They said they don't believe in Global Warming (the fact that they would ignore their own Academy of Science shows how anti-intellectual they are).

America is such a large country that they seem to feel that the rest of the world really isn't here, unless it affects them directly. I can say that because I grew up there and then moved to Europe. Even friends forget I don't live there, that we don't have the same stores, the same products, the same "stuff"--or indeed the same attitudes to world events. The rest of the world just isn't real to them.
I've always wondered if in other large countries like China and Australia people are as ethnocentric as that, or if it's a uniquely American problem.

In general, yes. And I'm an American. Apparently, based on some of the answers here, some don't understand what the word ignorant means either.

Does anyone think that all negroes are fellons or all latinos are illegals or all irish are drunks??? I mean c'mon!
Easy with the generalization or you too will be shown to be an "ignorant American". You don't think that there are folks in other lands who are a little more "provincial" in their mindset than they should be? What about the Islamic nutbars blowing themselves up for religion? You'd call them worldly?
Yes people the world over tend to know more about the US than we do about other countries, but then again who is the world's only super power? If someone stuck the "Sears Tower" in your "hood" dontcha think that some of the other buildings/houses might get missed by the odd passers by?
Size matters, and not just to women!

It seems to me that about 2/3 of them could not care less about the rest of the world, and therefore are even proud of their ignorance.

LOL...No I do not think American are ignorant about world affairs. The arrogance of the writer to think that there is anything useful in a newspaper anymore other than to wrap fish with it is silly. People are more aware and they are no longer falling for the biased incorrect reporting in tabloids, as you certainly cannot call them newspapers anymore.

The UN sent everyone in the world a questionnaire: What, in your honest opinion, is the solution to food shortages in the rest of the world?
But nobody understood it.
(I apologise in advance for the African bit; I didn't make the joke up)
The Africans didn't know what "food" means.
The West Europeans didn't know what "shortages" means.
The East Europeans didn't know what "honest" means.
The Chinese didn't know what "opinion" means.
In the Middle East, they didn't know what "solution" means,
And in America they didn't know what "the rest of the world" means!
