I think its because he was a likable old guy who got along well with people. God knows its not because he was a good president. And he died kind of tragically from Alzheimer's. As president, his advisors made most of the decisions for him, but he will always get credit for - even though he had nothing to do with it - the fall of communism in Europe. His economic policies stunk and it was truly a time of the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer. And, as an actor, his best movie role was "Bedtime For Bonzo" in which he co-starred with a chimp, but he carried some of that ability to communicate that he had honed as an actor, into politics and everyone thought he was wonderful.

Well he gave chemical weapons to Saddam Hussein who used them to gas the kurds and the Iranians. He also cut and run in Lebanon after over 200 marines were killed by a terrorist. Not much else unless you want to talk about the hundreds of billions he added to the deficit (that's ok, because Bill Clinton paid the debt for him).

he got the US to walk proud again. After Vietnam, Watergate, and Jimmy Carter, Americans started feeling better about themselves. The economy was gangbusters and he helped along with Margaret Thatcher, and Pope John Paul II bring down the Soviet empire.
