I was making a friend a cup of tea at her house when suddenly she yelped, "WHY do you do that?" I almost dropped the cup. It turns out that whenever I take a cup from the cupboard or shelf, in my own house or elsewhere, I automatically lift it to my nose and sniff it! I couldn't believe it so I asked my husband and some other friends and they all agreed, that it's a strange habit but I always do it. I feel weird now!
Has anyone else discovered one of their own habits only after someone mentions it?

yes, my husband brought this to my attention, apparently when I sit around without my shoes on, I snap my toes like anyone else would snap their fingers. I didn't have a clue.

I put my index finger on my right hand to my lips and tap them when I'm upset or worried about something, I didn't even know I did it until my brother said I looked just like our mom when I did that as it was a habit she had, I asked everyone else like you did if I do that and they all said yes and looked at me like I had two heads, I honestly hadn't realised I did it, my brother reckons I have only done it since my mom died 7 years ago, spooky.

Everyone has habits and bad habits... to someone who doesn't do what ever it is it's going to look weird but everyone has them... nobody knows about the habit until you are told about it as its normally second nature to you!
Ever since i was a child i always wiped my mouth on my cuff of my sleeve... i don't even notice I'm doing it until someone tells me... luckely I've started to grow out of it now.
i also bite my lip a lot or scrape my nail around my lip... its second nature to me, but i get told off from my fiancee!!!

Yeah I got loads but thats my picky hubby for ya!! Ive never noticed any unless u call pmt a bad habit lol

Don't feel bad, I sniff cups before I use them also. My husband looked at me funny the first few times he saw me do this...

I talk with my hands alot, like wiggling my fingers if i say "finger food" , you get the picture. i wasn't aware of it until i kept geeting comments about it. But i think its quite a fun habit to have.

not me but my hubby keeps lifting the tea pot lid when we are in a cafe to see how much tea is left, my grandaughter pointed this out

i always rinse a cup out first because I use it. goes for pots and pans too.
