People have been hitting balls with sticks for centuries - it evolved from some of the same games that cricket came from. What is generally considered the birth of baseball is from 1845, when Alexander Cartwright wrote what became known as the "Knickerbocker Rules", which were the first codification of rules that can be directly linked to the modern game. Abner Doubleday and Alexander Cartwright adapted the game of Cricket for the American audience... They basically took Cricket and made it fun to watch and play.
