For my first visit to the tanning bed, untan, what would be the best tanning lotion to use so that I don't get fried, and how long should I stay in the tanning bed?

Tanning beds can cause skin cancer just like the sun does. It's plain ole burning of the first few layers of your skin. Skin damage. When you're older, your skin will have brown spots & be wrinkled.
Go for it, you're young. You can't die young can you?

You should always use a lotion if your going to tan. You will see better and longer lasting results if you do. If you go to a good salon, the staff should be knowledgeable on the products and be able to show you the product best for you. Yes tanning in a bed is like the sun but not quite the same. When you are out in the sun you can not control the doses of UVA and UVB you get. In a tanning bed you can. Thats the only difference really. Have you tried Fake Bake?

Don't use tanning lotion the first time. Save that for when you already have a base tan and are working on a deep tan. How long you should go the first time depends on how dark you are now and how easily you burn. I usually go about 7 minutes when I haven't been tanning for a while, but I'm pretty pale and I burn easily.

Enjoy your tan!

You can buy lotions there, just start with a cheap basic lotion. You will probably start at 5 to 8 minutes. They will help you.
