Pretend: you can buy ANY 10 artworks in the world----paintings, sculptures, famed bldgs, photos. No one can refuse to sell; you will NEVER be able to resell (but may give to museums--for no special tax break). Price is absolutely no object. Security, insurance not an issue, nor is storage---so if you REALLY WANT Sistine Chapel ceiling, Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater, or Taj Mahal, it can be delivered and set up for you. These are just for YOUR delight and joy, for the rest of your life!

What items would you pick?

(Yes, you can pick something that's been destroyed, so long as we have a historical record of what it looked like.)

Go crazy! Think of the fun of sharing your opinions (and why) with others, and not of the possible points....

Why did I ask? Think "10 best" lists (on lots of things---see some of my other Q) allow people to play, explore their deep wishes, and I LOVE to see how they respond. And a manuscript CAN be an artwork if you want to call it that....so go crazy! It's for your pleasure!

Ten - gosh, that's riches! Curious to know why you ask. I guess from the way you frame the question that I'm not allowed any of Beethoven's manuscripts, but may I have his death mask please?

Then - no particular order:

Francis Bacon's Triptych Three Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion, and maybe one of his Screaming Popes;

There's a Robert Mapplethorpe photograph of two flowers - one's leaning down as if talking to the other - and I've never seen it reproduced even in poster form, darn it.

A little Henry Moore miniature - doesn't matter which just as long as I can stroke it while I sit.

Marie Antionette's diamond necklace, and may I have a nice crown to go with it? Might raise the tone of my dinner parties. HM the Q's coronation dress also .. that was a real work of art though I haven't the waistline.

Leonardo's Battle of Anghiari (it was lost, so let's go find it)

A part-finished Stradivarius - violin, cello, doesn't matter - because then people might be able to analyse it to discover his secrets without destroying a completed one. (They're still not sure how he achieved his effects, so let's have one of his cast-offs).

That was fun. Should have been asked at a party ... would have kept things going for hours.

Manet, Monet, impressionist stuff, faberge eggs and the Lloyd Wright house once owned by George Hill Hodel - pictures I've seen are amazing! The art objects are things that bring peace and color into life, and faberge eggs are SO decadent and glittery and so amazing to look at it would take a lifetime to see the entire thing truly and clearly!

The entire contents of the Rothko Gallery at Tate Modern. They were originally painted on commission for a restaurant but they didn't want them when they were completed. Its the best gallery, very calming and womb like. If i had all the paintings i could recreate the calmness - mind you I'd need a large room.
