Which OS are you using? I really hope you're using Windows XP, because I noticed you said you've "been online since 1998," and that'd be a problem already. It's not fun, but for $99 you can buy a Windows XP upgrade package and reformat your hard drive. You'd loose your files and documents, but you'd see a WAY BETTER performance. Otherwise, if you alread have Windows XP it's stronly recommended that you have SP2. And if you do, all I could suggest is that you defragment your hard drive, clean the drive, and probably check for a virus with anti-virus programs like Spy Sweeper. That's all I know. email me if I could help anymore: arsefacex@yahoo.com

Well, like u said, there can be quite a lot of reasons for this.
One of the obvious is spy- and adware
Others could be a faulty powersupply, or if you,ve got a graphics card installed, that may also be a cause for this
The first pc I ever bought had a faulty motherboard, and this caused it to " freeze " at different times during use
I would recommend taking your pc in to the nearest tech shop, and have it checked
Or you could first try and download anti-spy-/ and adware software
Best bet is XoftSpy
You can find the crack at either crackfind.com, astalavista.com or even crackdb.com
A hint...
If you want a really stable system, try and install Linux on your system. You don't have to format the whole drive again! ;)
If done properly, Linux will use only the " free space " on your drive.
Then when you download stuff for windows, or check your mail, you use the Linux partition
Because of the way that Linux is programmed, it can't get any virusses or trojans and stuff
Then when you're finished downloading, just pop it on a flash, and copy it over on the Windows partition
I know it sounds like a lot of work, but hey, it ain't easy
You can also try using a Virtual Machine application
It boots another OS [ like Windows XP ] while still in Linux!!
That way you don't have to reboot everytime you download something
AJ ;)

Spyware/Viruses are a big cause for this. Download Windows Defender and do 2-3 Full Scans

First, check your memory to see if you have enough memory and hard drive space, second what operating system do you have. If you have windows 98, you need a new operating system like windows xp. And third you may need and new anti-virus or spyware software on your computer. The best thing to do is go to a computer technician and have him or her check your computer.

Your PC can be loaded too much or there might be a virus that freezes your computer. Or your RAM is not sufficient to handle the operations you run.

The computer is probably working on something. And what it's working on might be something that you don't want it to. But it doesn't know that, it just does what it's told by the commands it gets. So hopefully you will get some good anti-virus and other software and speed things up. :))
