"Motorcycle daredevil Robbie Knievel jumped a 200-foot-wide chasm of the Grand Canyon on Thursday, breaking his own record."

"This Grand Canyon jump was partially based on his father's radical and ill-fated attempt at jumping the Snake River Canyon in 1974 on a rocket "motorcycle" which was really much more rocket than motorcycle. In Robbie's jump he actually used a motorcycle and he actually jumped the Grand Canyon. "

NO... contrary to what the PR people (and some of the posters above) claim, neither Evel nor Robbie Kenievel ever jumped the Grand Canyon or even attempt it. In 1999, stuntman Robby Kenievel (son of the famous Evel Kenievel) jumped a rocket-powered motorcycle across a VERY SMALL MINOR DRAINAGE SIDE-CANYON that eventually drains into the Grand Canyon on the Hualapai Indian reservation to the west of the National Park. This little side-canyon was only 150 feet across and 75 feet deep - not even very big for a side canyon (as one local said "This is barely a wash in this country").

An impressive jump to be sure (and a certainly fatal fall if he fell), but still is nothing compared to the actual Grand Canyon which would be virtually impossible to jump with any land vehicle. Despite the fact that he was not jumping over the actual Grand Canyon, it was touted as such by Las Vegas promoters.

Even at its narrowest part, the ACTUAL Grand Canyon is more than 5 miles across (in most places it is 8 to 15 miles across). Near Lee's Ferry, the river flows through Glen Canyon which is quite a bit narrower (a couple hundred yards), but I have not heard of anybody even trying there (and that is not the actual Grand Canyon either).

Heck, I was up at the Grand Canyon once during a rain storm and jumped across a water-filled gutter in the parking lot that eventually drained over the edge of the Grand Canyon. If jumping over any ditch or drainage that empties into the Grand Canyon is the same thing as jumping the Grand Canyon itself.. than I HAVE JUMPED THE GRAND CANYON TOO! And I did it without a jet-powered motorcycle. :)
