I have heard of women who had no idea they were in labor and had painless contractions until the hard labor started. As far as the water breaking, usually contractions have already started but aren't particularly painful and easily mistaken for Braxton Hicks contractions.

If your water breaks they will keep you in the hospital, I know from experience they will put you on pitocin to get contractions going you can only go for I think it is 2 days once your water breaks the risk of infection is very high. Your mucus plug you can lose weeks before you have your baby it means your cervix is dilating regardless of if you feel contractions or not.

I do belive your mucus plug can be out for 2 weeks or so before you give birth. If your water breaks, you may not have contractions yet, but you do need to notify your doctor. They'll want to be sure you deliver within 24 hours to prevent infection.

my second child, my water broke while I was sleeping, and I had no contractions. had to get potocin when I arrived to reduce chance of infection. (you can lose your plug at once, or over a lengthy period.
Girl,m the thing is you will KNOW! when they come so hard, and you can barely breath or move. and they dont stop coming. A small cramp every now & then is braxton hicks.

If you're a Brit, ring NHS direct and get proper information. Number in telephone book. Otherwise ring your local hospital.
