The reason that they start with "555-" is because no phone number in real life is allowed to start with "555-" (but recently it has been changed that "555-0100" - "555-0199" are reserved due to lack of available phone numbers). You can read more about it in the source.

Because the phone companies in the USA have all agreed NOT to use 555 for any real phone numbers. So that some dumb person who's watched a movie, doesn't decide to try calling it and bug someone innocent.

I think it's because there are some real bored people out there that try calling the numbers. I think they just sat aside the 555 prefix for Hollywood. lol!
I, also, read somewhere that when Jenny 867-5309 (song from the 80's) came out, it caused a lot of prank phone calls asking for Jenny. lol Anyone, even now, with that phone number will get swamped with phone calls.

(555) is the area code in Ames, IA. The true Hollywood secret is that the studios and networks (back in the 1967) decided it would be a savvy marketing idea to direct all calls/questions inspired by the movies and television to a call center, where operators could get instant feedback from the audience. The studio executives felt it was akin to a free and broad focus group.

The reason they do that is because if anyone tried to call those numbers then they won't reach anyone real because no real life numbers start with 555.

They don't won't to use a real phone number. Since 555 is not a telephone number they just use that number.

becuz no real phone number starts with 555, so they dont have to worry about crazies calling the pretend number they use.

That's because 555 is my prefix and I like to talk to anyone. You can dial 55 21 9312-9849( Brazil) and you'll realize it's true.

Someone else noticed this, too!! How cool is that!!! Thats the Hollywood prefix, used for many, many years in the Business!! Its a phone number, no one else can use, but Hollywood !! So, dont bother trying to call it, no one can get anywhere, doing that, its all pretend, anyway!!! Its really cool, that someone else noticed this, other than my family!! Ha! Ha! How cool, is that!!
