psychoanalytic- our problems originate from early years of life

c.b. - we develop negative/problematic thought patterns in early years (from a developmental perspective)

humanistic - we strive to self actualize

I don't know what context you want these in. In developmental psychology, our problems are more severe the further away we are from their origin. For example, if we take the stand that schizophrenia develops btw 6 mos and year 1 (due to trust issues from a dev. psy perspective), then someone diagnosed at year 6 is less "sick" than someone diagnosed at 30.

For my last developmental class (developmental perspectives in abnormal psychology) I used this website extensively: http://psych.athabascau.ca/html/aupr/developmental.shtml

Hope this helps.

I will share what I know, which is limited, and hope you realize that this is not to be presented to your prof... unless he/she is a most unusual person.

Psychoanalytic is mostly Freud, although Fritz Perls included aspects of Freud's work in his own Gestalt therapy, which Perls considered the "second step" in the psychotherapeutic process... the third step he wondered about, but did not know what it might be: in his book, In and Out the Garbage Pail [last I heard out of print].

The cognitive and behavioral are like peas in a pod, different pea perhaps but in what way different from the others? That is, they are focused in the Left-hemisphere of the brain, and encourage denial of the Esoteric realms in Man, which they mistakenly believe to be inaccessible. The denial of the Esoteric is mostly an unknown fear of the unknown within themselves.

The humanistic approach is behaviorism with feelings. Important to note that "feelings" are not emotions, but what ones MIND allows one to recognize of ones otherwise repressed emotions... which are quite unknown to most behaviorally trained therapists.

The various approaches, methods, "think" themselves to be very different from one another, however, there isn't really any difference in them except for the delusional belief that there is.

The exceptions within these are those individuals who are naturally able to access some level of psychic understanding of he Esoteric realms within themselves. These people can, to some degree, use empathic knowledge to serve their clients. This natural gift would, of course be greatly enhanced if the field of metal health would allow such people to be trained in how to use their gifts. This is not allowed because those in charge of training are frightened to death that someone might know something they are incapable of knowing.
Peace

Psychoanalytic refers to Freud's theories: ego, super ego, and id.
Cognitive is that thought controls emotion and behavior, and dysfunctional thinking makes you ill.
Behavior is BF Skinner and operant conditioning, that we have little choice but are conditioned to act as we do by rewards or their lack.
Humanistic is Carl Rodgers, believing that each person has dignity and is an adult needing help tp reach their potential.
