on girls under the age of 18 in the us. However in the cultures that practice this barbaric ritual, women, regardless of their age generally have no say in their lives, the men, be it their husbands or fathers, have all the say in what happens to them. Women have no recourse and most often times, no voice in these relationships. Don't you agree that the practice should be banned outright, completely from being performed on any female whatsoever? I think the us government is being very lax in their duty to prevent human rights violations in this case, not to mention many others, but I am only specifically talking about this one at the moment.

Yes, if the person doesn't consent, then it is a violation of one's rights and should, if possible, be stopped (just like all other violations of rights). However, what I'm wondering is, why do you mention female circumcision only, and not male circumcision? In my opinion they're BOTH violations of human rights.

When people reach the magical age of 18 they can do whatever they please with their body. While it is true that some women are still forced into the procedure - a law banning the ritual won't change that. Infact it would be more likely to end up like they do in Africa - performing it alone with a broken peice of glass while other people hold the woman down. Education is a better tool than forbidding.

If I recall, Gloria Steinem was deeply involved in the issue of clitorechtomy and mutilation. Check to see if her website says something about the status of that.
Much though I agree that its terrible, I wonder just how much the USA should stick its nose into other cultures and tell them what to do!...
