Your optical drive will display as DVD-RAM or DVDRW drive or something like that. My DVDRW dual layer drive shows up as a DVD-Ram drive, that's just the way it was made. But... the point is Windows should be able to tell you, or you could look on the drive itself, usually the formats it supports are written on it. If it says DVD/CDRW then it doesn't burn DVDs. If it says DVDRW and so on then it does. The other way to find out is to stick a DVDR or DVDRW disc in the drive and see if Windows recognizes it, if it does, try burning a file to it, if it works then you just proved it. Of course, that will only work if you have expendable media lying around, like I do.

You need a DVD burner (DVD RW) and associated software.
Look on the front of the cd drive and see if the words DVD RW or CD RW is on it.

Just click on "My computer"
And there you should see Hard drives, and DEVices with REmovable Storage..
There should be DVD-R, or DVD-RW if not,
you dont have the burner..

when the drive is open look at the front of the tray it will say DVD+ or- R/RW if you can write DVD's
