I have an established 30 gal, one betta, a new plecostamus, a new angel fish, a new red crab (the pet store told me they r peaceful dwellers) and 4 new gold (something) plats..i woke up this morning and 3 of the 4 plats are dead! I had treated the tank about 2 weeks ago for a bacteria, ick and Ive changed the filter..I just dont understand why the fish are dying. Are bettas aggressive?? Help!!

Hmmm... It could be your betta. They are very territorial. Just last night, I actually saw when my betta killed one of my sunsetplaties. There was nothing I could do. He just kept nipping at him till' my platy couldnt take it anymore. I was just staring helpless. It's probably your betta, or your water might be bad. Did you put in conditioner? If the bigger fish are all doing good, but it's just the smaller fish, your best guess is that the betta is causing all of the trouble. Get him a smaller betta bowl or tank, they love those because they are small, and that's what there are used to, and shove in some plants and maybe a little rock or something for him to hide in!!!

Good Luck!

1. Treating your tank destroys all the beneficial bacteria, your tank is spiking in ammonia and nitrites, and has the increased bio-load of new fish.
2. Angelfish pick on all other fish.
3. Changing the filter also removes a large amount of the beneficial bacteria
4. You crab needs to breathe air. Give him a hard plastic plant or a ladder of some type to get to the surface.

First(from experience) never mix Betta with other fish because they love to fight and mostly win unless they are facing bigger and stronger fish. i sorta feel bad for you because you got a 30 gal tank and may have 1 fish in it. My advice is to get a three gal tank and keep the Betta in it and maby get more fish in the 30 gal.

Best way to tell if a fish died in a fight is to check out its fins. Do they have chunks missing or are they frayed? You'd probably see some open wounds too.

If this isn't the case, I'd get a test kit and check your ph, nitrate, and ammonia levels.

It could be that the Betta is aggressive. What is your PH level? Is it in a good area? Angels can be aggressive also.

i allways keep an extra tank hady jusy incase somethin like that happens . you may need to separate the platies from the others. also sometimes the fish you buy may allready have a disease, or they could have been shocked when put into your tank. make sure you buy from a good retailer. big als if you havwe one close to you
