Just tried both - thanks David, looked very silly and have mascara over most of my face:) I reckon its like patting your head and rubbing your tummy...keeping eyes open and still, its hard to do the opposite with your mouth.

I'm a dude and i know that answer..... Having you mouth open stretches all the other muscles in your face making your eyes more open for more evenly coverage. Try this: Close your mouth and your eyes. No problem at all ,huh. Now, keep your mouth open but close your eyes. Do you feel a little more tension on your eyes now? Thats why women keep there mouth open cause you need your eyes to be relaxed too in the process.

it is because when u r putting mascara surely u cant see who is in front of u, and someone like me can come and put a coackroach in ur mouth and without knowing u may eat that.

It's a natural "reflex" to applying mascara because it stretches the muscles around your eyes more, widening them, and therefore making it easier to apply mascara.
try putting on mascara and i'm sure you'll do the same thing!

what a fab question. I always have my mouth open when putting my mascara on. maybe it helps keep the eyes open?!?!?!?!? Gonna try to keep my mouth shut and see what happens.....

Scientifically? Because most tip their head back, which restricts the nasal airways and opens the throat (an in built function which is why the position is used in Respiratory Resusitation).

thats so not true. i cnt put mascara on with my mouth open. i have to close my mouth.
