Hi. First I would like to clarify. According to wikipedia it is SciFi channel that has severed ties to SG1 not MGM. The Powers That Be in charge of making SG1 have explained that they do wish to continue SG1 either through an 11th season or a mini series ala Farscape:The Peacekeeper Wars or through a Full Length Motion Picture.
Now as to your question of should SG1 be continued, Yes and No.
I do think that SG1 has in part "jumped the shark". On the other hand I think that this last season, the last episode in particular, were a marked improvement over seasons 8 and 9.
I do know this much, good or bad, if there are any more SGs made I will be watching them!!

Season 8 should have been the last. By the end of season 8, they had wrapped up all their major story arcs and were about to say goodbye to their second major character. An important major character: nothing's quite the same without Jack's wisecracks, as much as they attempt to replace them.
In order to make subsequent seasons work, they basically had to create a new plot and largely a set of new characters from scratch (and shamelessly ressurect a few old ones.) The character of Daniel Jackson was basically butchered in the process, becoming just another cavalier action hero instead of the fumbling archaeologist we grew to love him as.
SG1 was a wonderful show. I wish it could go on forever as a great show. Unfortunately, that's impossible for any series, so I would like to see it go out gracefully. That may already be too late, but I think it should at least be spared the further stripping of its dignity. Wrap it up with a mini-series or something, and then say a greatful goodbye.

I personally would like it to continue, but at this point we will have to accept the fact that over time, even if fans rally and save the show, cast members will want to move on.
At this point, Mitchell and Vala could continue for a few more seasons easy, but at the very least, in time you run the risk of losing at least Carter and Teal'C, if not Daniel as well.
Besides, what would the series do for villains? SG-1 has defeated just about all the System Lords except for maybe Ba'al, the Replicators, and will (hopefully) take care of the Trust and defeat the Ori before the season (series?) finale next year.
Who could be next?

Absolutely. The Sci Fi channel has too many shows that aren't really sci fi to be giving up a great sci fi show.

AS LONG AS THE WRITERS AND CAST CAN KEEP IT AS FRESH AND AS FANTASTIC AS IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN I THINK IT SHOULD GO ON FOREVER!!
SEASON 10 HAD A COUPLE OF CROSSOVERS WITH SEASON 3 OF ATLANTIS AND I THINK IT WOULD BE A REAL SHAME IF THE ATLANTIS TEAM HAD TO CARRY THE TORCH ON ALONE, ALTHOUGH I DO THINK THEY ARE MORE THAN CAPABLE OF HANDLING IT!
