Torque is a twisting version of force. Technically, it's equal to force times lever arm length.

Suppose you have a meterstick and you attached one end to a shaft so both the shaft and the stick are horizontal, making an L shape. And suppose you hung a 12.8 newton weight (that's a little larger than a kilogram) from the end. If you have something holding the end of the shaft still so that it won't turn, the meterstick is applying 12.8 Nm to the shaft, and whatever is keeping it from turning must be applying 12.8 Nm back.

Real easy: 12.8 Newtons is roughly 1.3 kilograms. The maximum twisting power of your bike's engine (in an arm-wrestling contest, for example) amounts to 1.3 kilograms on a one-metre long lever. Also, a kilo is 2.2 pounds, so it's about 2.8 pounds on a one metre long lever. Of course, a metre is 3.3 feet, so 2.8 x 3.3 is 9.4 pounds applied on a lever that's a foot long. The distance from my elbow to my wrist is about one foot and God knows I can apply 9.4 pounds of force in an arm-wrestling match, so I can probably beat the best your bike's engine has got to give in an arm-wrestling match. But not for too long, he he...
