Why is it that, in cold winters, a tub of water placed in a farmer's canning cellar helps prevent canned food from freezing?

The water, since it's water and not ice, adds just the needed amount of warmth to the room. Root cellars and pump houses used to use this method because they were well insulated either by ground, or by their construction. When I was young, we used a very small light bulb in our cellar and in our pump house. The grandparents, however, used barrels (partially filled) of water. The barrels were easier to move outside into the sunlight during the day to warm them.

the water acts like a magnet for the cold tempuratures, it will freeze beofre the items in the can , because of the density difference.
