If you live in the US, it might be a wolf spider - they have brownish-orange legs with black stripes around them, and they are really big and scary looking. Wolf spiders don't build webs, but simply lurk in dark crevices (I call them "wood pile spiders" as that's where I often find them) and pounce on passing prey.
