i was babysitting an 8th month old baby...and it's not like i've never been around babies before, it's just that this baby's never been around me. anyway, the whole night was good, until i had to put her to sleep. and then she went BIZERK! so while she was crying i just called the mom and said ,"Do you just want me to keep her awake until you get back? Or keep trying?" and what do ya know..right after i hung up, she stopped crying and actually fell asleep in my arms.
did i just panic..and if i waited a while she would've stopped? do ya think the mom'll call me back? or was she just annoyed that i didn't wait long enough. xD sorry...i already posted this question. but forgot this detail.

Mr. Mom again, your panic was probably warranted. I'd have been more upset had you NOT called, and when I got home found the baby STILL crying.

Waiting a while might have been the right choice. But hey, it was a lesson learned right? If a baby is tired and fussing around, they're battling trying to go to sleep. Give 'em a little time and they'll fall fast asleep. I'm sure it was okay to call, most parents like to know how their child is doing rather than not.

I answered your last questions and even with this detail, my answer still stands... don't worry about it. You don't know if she would have stopped crying or not. Even though she did this time, she may not next time. I think it was responsible for you to have called the mother and asked her what she would like you to do. She made the decision to leave the dinner party and, as I said before, you probably gave her the excuse she was looking for to politely leave.

You should always call the parents if you have a question, no matter how big or how small. Something that may seem small to you may be a big deal to the parents.
I don't think you panicked. There's no way to know if you waited if she would have stopped crying.
The mom should call you back because you showed concern for their child.

I think that it is ok that you called the mother and asked a question about their child. Nothing wrong with that, next time you babysit you will know better what to expect. I don't blame you for calling, it is good for you to have good communication with the parents.

most babies really don't like to be put to bed. you usually just have to wait. next time I'd ask the mom if she normally lets her baby cry it out or holds her til she falls asleep.

I think that the mom will be grateful that you called. I would feel more comfortable that you called to check... not annoyed. Hope it works out for you!

NEVER......I say NEVER......babysit with such a young baby again!!! You are much too young and immature. I have a horrible fear that if something really happened that you would not have the slightest idea what to do. This is a serious answer. Shame on this mother for her lack of judgement. I think you did the best you could under the circumstances, honey......just don't do it again!
