Mothballs and coffee grounds. Yep. My problem was the recidivist squirrel population eating my damn Gerber Daisies. I found that a combination of mothballs and coffee grounds (supplied by the local squirrel-hating coffee house lady) worked wonders. I also discovered that this knockout combo does a dandy job of keeping the neighborhood cats out of the garden. Plus, the coffee grounds seem to be a really good fertilizer. I read that somewhere when I was a kid (probably someone's science project?), but I'd never tried it, and it works. Edit: Replace the mothballs only when you can't smell them any more, and the coffee grounds can be touched up after it rains, and only then when there's a lot washed away. As far as the smell of the mothballs, you don't want to use so many that your garden smells like an old lady's attic, but you do want them to be pungent when you stick your face right up to the plants. Now, the cats in your neighborhood, being of apparently poor character, may decide to be jerks and just develop a taste for coffee, in which case you'll have all the same problems. Only faster.

Moth balls are the most icky thing to a cat, & for that matter most animals. If you can find them in your local dollar store, place them in the loose soil where you believe a cat has gone before, to obliterate the scent markings that cats leave behind. That will stop most of the problem & won't hurt your plants too much. They will decompose over time & you'll have to replace them every 5 months or so.

At your local PET shop they have a variety of sprays and soil & plant aditives. You may have to try more than one. We have a spray called "Flower Repellent" that is for dogs and cats. Since we live in Spain, is says "for correcting had habits". Funny, but at least it works for dogs. Cats, I don't know. Petsmart is one of the stores I remember. Good luck! Home centers with a garden section should have it too. IE: Home depot, Lowes, Sears, Etc.
P.S. Experimenting is half the fun.

keep it damp. few days a week they maybe will give up.
after cleanup ...put some kitty food spread there cats are usually smart "don't sh*t where you eat."
catch the neighbors cat and demand clean up or call the pound.
my kitty allowed to roam comes home for the clean litter box. note: cats are clean and clean place to go could be the problem...
might want ot put a cheep litter box at corner of owners yard..
or some note to them.... depends on relations with neighbor and their attitude sense of responsibility.
pepper good but may kill sensitive plants.
mothballs are toxic.and stink. toxic i'd use as last resort esp if children near!

My answer is slightly different...........MOTH FLAKES....................
Because Children in the area could mistake Moth Balls for Candy...Really, kids age two to 5 have done that, so Moth Flakes!
Also, My mom has laid chicken wire fence down on the ground for years and let her plants grow up through it. The cats cannot happily dig because of the chicken wire and so they go else where.

Get a large bottle of cayenne pepper from your local warehouse grocery store. Sprinkle the cayenne pepper ( very hot red dried ground pepper) all over the areas you want kids and pets to avoid. The pets may learn quicker than any kids. It does work for both.

I have used chicken wire covering the soil. Cats do not like the feel of it and will go else where.
