i put food in mine. just don't put hard or stringy food in it.

For many years, garbage disposals were illegal in New York City because of a perceived threat of damage to the city's sewer system. The ban was rescinded on September 11, 1997 by local law 1997/071 which amended section 24-518.1, NYC Administative code.[1]

you're just not supposed to put big things in there. some people treat them like incinerators and shove bones, pits, seeds, and all manner of crazy stuff in there. little food bits are fine as long as they are not hard. i also have heard that potato peels are very bad and cause it to clog up.

I don't have one but my friend does. They are for food. That is why they are in the sink.

I always throw scraps down mine and I think that is what they are for.
