the velvet underground is the best band out of the 60's. after that i'd say rolling stones with brian jones.

these take time to appreciate though.

start with led zeppelin, the doors, and late beatles stuff. dabble in some floyd. read up on them and study their influences which will lead you to blues musicians like howlin wolf and muddy waters...and my fave. john lee hooker. from there you'll have a whole new appreciation for 60's music.

you'll be doing just fine by getting into the kinks as well.

This is a really tough question to ask a former radio broadcaster as myself...(laughing hard). For me, however one band stands out as being my all out favorite......KISS!!!!!

Before KISS, we had the post-hippie, "mellow" sound of rock n' roll....and we got a wee tad jaded on the acoustic "war protest" message thing; we wished for something new, something wild.

And KISS tore open on the scene like a rock and roll freakshow--and delivered the goods, with being the first to do many things that to this day are still being done, albeit on totally different scales, mind you.

Simon and Garfunkel got overran by four guys in high leather custom made boot heels and glitzy costumes and face mask makeup. KISS WOWed us with their huge multi-leveled stages with high voltage/volumed Marshall amps taller than most office buildings, dazzling behemoth stage light shows and that omnipresent lit KISS overhead logo.

And KISS was ballsy enough not to depend on a successful music formula of hard driving rock. They experimented with their music and it's different sounds. Listen to "Beth" and you'd never think KISS actually wrote and recorded THAT song and put it in an album titled "Destroyer"---which also hosted their anthem "Shout It Out Loud!!!".

They bravely dabbled into Disco with "I Was Made For Loving You" and later took a bad try at making a Styx/Rush like album called The Elder; some ideas flew, others crashed---but KISS tried them all.

And whether the makeup was on or off, throughout their 30 year history as a band, KISS lived the rock n roll life and like their only other counterparts, The Rolling Stones, KISS can shatter sold out concert ticket sales TODAY, just as they did back in the 70s.
