Spirit is one of the two rovers that landed on Mars in early 2004 and have been exploring it ever since (the other is called Opportunity). While originally designed for an operational lifetime of 90 days, they are now at approximately 10 times that and are still moving, although they have experienced some technical problems. Both of them have made a lot of interesting scientific discoveries on Mars and greatly increased our knowledge of the planet's surface conditions and geology. They are each about the size of a golf cart, and run off solar energy.
