Kilauea is perhaps the most active, and possibly the most studied volcano. Such volcanos were responsible for creating the entire chain of Hawaiian islands.

Krakatoa is believed to have been the most explosive volcano. 2/3 of the island was completly destroyed during a series of explosions in 1883.

The Paricutín volcano shows that no all volcanos come from mountains. This one literally grew out of a corn field in 1943.

You might check the book Krakatoa by Simon
Winchester. This eruption occurred 27 August 1883, and was one of the most disastrous in
recent history. It was heard 3000 miles away and
produced effects noticed all over the world.

Mount Etna in Italy is erupting right now. It is the most active volcano in Europe and a good one too. Its eruptions are seldom violent. You can find lots of information about it in Internet.

How about Mt. St. Helens in Washington State ? Maybe even the future eruption of Mt. Ranier also in Washington State , that will devastate Seattle and surrounding areas .

Try Vesuvius as this is probably best researched eruption in history. It has wiped out at least two cities: Herculaneum and Pompeii and you'll find plenty of information on that subject on Wikipedia and web.

Take a look at the volcano in Hawaii.. it erupts very slowly but lasts a LONG time...

or in Italy.. which erupts quickly and violently but doesn't last long.

I vote for Kilauea, on the island of Hawaii. Because it's one of the most studied volcanoes, you'll find lots of information-- including lots of pictures and video.

Arnott's Lodge, in Hilo, offers amazing lava hikes. You can see pictures of "ordinary people" on the hikes at their website.
