Convince him he needs help. He's addicted- painkillers are no different then any other street drug. They become super addictive after a while and certain drugs like Vicoden can hurt you in the long run. If you cant help him and he has a strong family it would be best to talk to them (if they're big in his life). He might hate you for a while but in the end he'll realize that you care about his well being. The big thing is to speak openly and honestly with him and tell him that you care about his life.

Is his doctor prescribing him his own pain meds? Maybe his doctor isnt giving him enough. I went through the same thing with my fiance. He has really bad back problems and his doctor wasnt prescribing him strong enough painkillers or enough painkillers to help his pain, so he started buying them off the street. He ended up addicted to Oxycontin and was taking like 3-4 80mg Oxys at a time 3-5 times a day. All you can do is talk to him and offer him help for his problem. If he is willing to get help, his best bet would be to get on methadone. It will help him get off all the other narcotics he is taking, it is very inexpensive when you buy it from the pharmacy ( a scrip of 90 10mg methadones is only about $25-$35 depending on the pharmacy), and methadone not only help him get off the other narcotics he is buying, but they also work well for back pain. My fiance has been on methadone for 3 years now and they help him really well. There is also the choice of rehab if he wants to completely get of all medication if his back isnt bothering him any more. Good Luck!

I can so totally relate to your friends pain, but the problem with pain medication is that when they wear off the pain comes back twice as strong and eventually you need more and more pain meds. Its a vicious circle. I had a severe back injury and I just stopped taking the pain meds on my own and I ended up completely flat on my back in bed for over 6 months, I had thoughts of suicide because the pain was so bad but i still refused to take the meds. Then i started to research what causes pain etc.etc.etc.. bottom line is I took vitamin B6 (100mg) 3 times a day, Niacin (500mg) 3 times a day and magnesium (250mg) 3 times a day. i did that for about 2 weeks then i slowly got it down to twice a day and then finally just before bedtime, and i am totally healed. It took about 3 months before I really started to feel better and i could actually move with very little pain. Good luck

Tell him he will ruin his life if he keeps this up. He is addicted and needs to stop. My husband had his kidney taken out last year and would only take ultracet as it is a non-narcotic pain releiver. He knows he had addict behavior in the past and does not want to get swept back into it. We have a neighbor who had a car accident and got on percocet and vicodan and last week she overdosed and they actually revived her at the hospital. Good luck.

Maybe he did not need any surgery on his back in the first place. If he is overweight, tell him to lose weight and control his diet. The problem with his back pain may be his kidney failing.Tell him to change his diet and eating habit.

Buy your friend a pair of willie nelson concert tickets or maybe try cracking him in the head with a shovel. Good luck to you and your friend.

Leave him alone. He's a grown man. If he needs your help, he'll ask for it.
